Isidore Niépce, dated the 12 th . march 3 , and that letter fully confirms what I suspected of Daguerre’s manœuvres with poor Nicéphore, but Mr. Isidore observes that for the present that letter might be considered confidential ! 4 When you come to Kew again, pray put Niépce’s memoir in your poket, I wish to com- pare it with my original 5 . Sir, You kindly offered in your letter to the Literary Gazette of march 2 nd 7 to show the spe- cimens of photogenic drawing in your possession to those who would call upon you to that purpose. My time is not entirely at my disposal or else I should have availed myself of your offer. As I am to deliver a lecture on this subject to a highly respectable audience at the Theatre of the Russell Institution on the 23 rd of the present month, perhaps you will have no objection to lend them to me for the evening that I may be able triumphantly to prove the original discovery of your friend M. Bien que le nom du destinataire ne figure pas sur le document, c’est sans aucun doute à lui qu’était adres- sée cette lettre ; celle-ci fait naturellement suite au courrier que Bauer avait reçu de Home fils le mois pré- cédent (v. 611). 3. Erreur ; Bauer désignait la lettre du 12 avril (v. 612). 4. Ce point d’exclamation en dit long sur la surprise de Bauer qui, comme nous, comprenait évidemment mal qu’Isidore pût vivre « en très-bonne intelligence avec Daguerre ». 5. Le mémoire de son correspondant était-il cette « autre note » (v. 433) aujourd’hui conservée à Austin? C’est ce qu’on prétendait dans le milieu des historiens de la photographie anglais en 1884 (T.P.N. 23/05/1884, p. 327). Il faudrait en déduire que Bauer ne posséda pas d’autre mémoire que celui du 8 décembre (du moins jusqu’à ce mois de mai 1839).
